NEW DELHI, JUNE 14 : IIT Kanpur has released an extended merit list on June 14, following an MHRD guideline. In an unprecedented move, MHRD had earlier instructed IIT Kanpur to release a supplementary merit list for admission to B.Tech courses in IITs. The ministry had also directed that the merit list be published before start of JoSAA counselling, which is scheduled to start on June 15. Students included in the supplementary merit list could participate in JoSAA counselling even though they were not included in the first merit list which was released on June 10.

The supplementary list is likely to include 13,842 additional students, which will take the total number of qualified candidates to 31,980. In the first merit list, 18,138 had qualified in the exam.
In addition to releasing the extended or supplementary merit list, IIT Kanpur has also reduced the minimum qualifying marks to accommodate the additional candidates.

The move to release an extended merit list is designed to ensure that the number of qualified candidates is at least twice the number of available seats in the IITs, which stands at 11,279. With only 18,138 candidates qualifying in the first list, the number of candidates in the merit list against available seats stood at 1.6. It thus represented the first time the average number of candidates per seat has fallen below 2 in the last seven years.
Prakash Javadekar, Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India, tweeting on the subject said, “Responding to requests from students & IIT Community & to proactively ensure that all reservation seats are duly filled, I have directed @IIT Kanpur conducting JEE (Advanced) to make available candidates, strictly as per merit, twice the number of seats in each category...If necessary by releasing a supplementary list.”
