IIT Kharagpur assistant professor found dead in staff quarters; police probe underway

36-year-old IIT Kharagpur assistant professor was found hanging in staff quarters, investigation is underway.
An assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead in his staff quarters inside the institute campus on July 29. The deceased has been identified as Dr Deepak Reddy Pullaguram, a native of Hyderabad and an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. According to police, security personnel discovered the 36-year-old professor hanging from the ceiling in staff quarters during routine checks and immediately alerted the authorities. A police team reached the spot, recovered the body and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Confirming the development, Kharagpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Siddarth Singh Dangi told PTI, "The body of a professor of IIT Kharagpur has been recovered from his room. He was found hanging from the ceiling. We are investigating the case."
Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials said the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, and investigators are examining all possible angles before arriving at any conclusion.
Following the recovery of the body, Dr Pullaguram was taken to BC Roy Hospital where doctors declared him dead. The body has since been sent for post-mortem examination, the report of which is expected to help ascertain the cause of death.The deceased's family members have been informed about the incident, police said.
The institute has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
