New BTech courses in quantum science, agricultural engineering and chemical engineering aim to prepare students for future technologies
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has announced three new undergraduate programmes that aim to align engineering education with rapidly evolving industry needs. The institute will now offer BTech degrees in quantum science and engineering, agricultural engineering with data analytics, and chemical engineering with data analytics, starting from the upcoming academic session.
The move comes at a time when technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and data analytics are reshaping industries across the world. By combining traditional engineering education with these emerging fields, IIT Mandi hopes to prepare students for future-ready careers and research opportunities.
Among the three programmes, the BTech in quantum science and engineering is particularly notable as it is being described as the first dedicated undergraduate programme in quantum engineering offered by an IIT. The course will help build a skilled workforce for one of the fastest-growing areas of technology.

IIT Mandi bets on quantum future
Quantum technologies are increasingly being viewed as the next frontier in computing and communications, and IIT Mandi 's new programme has been designed with that future in mind. Students will study subjects ranging from quantum computing and communication to sensing technologies, materials and hardware systems.
The curriculum also draws from computer science, mathematics and artificial intelligence, giving students a broader understanding of how quantum technologies intersect with other disciplines. The programme is intended to prepare graduates for careers in advanced computing, secure communication systems and next-generation technology development.
IIT Mandi adds data-driven agriculture
The institute has also introduced a BTech in agricultural engineering with data analytics, reflecting the growing role of technology in modern farming. The programme combines core agricultural engineering concepts with tools such as AI, machine learning, IoT, automation and remote sensing.
Students will gain hands-on experience through fieldwork, internships, laboratory sessions and industry collaborations. The programme is aimed at developing professionals who can help address challenges related to food security, sustainable farming and climate-resilient agriculture.
IIT Mandi expands interdisciplinary learning
The third programme, chemical engineering with data analytics, blends chemical engineering fundamentals with data science, machine learning and process modelling. This approach will enable students to understand both industrial processes and the digital tools increasingly used to optimise them.
One of the programme's distinguishing features is its flexibility. Students will have the option to pursue minors or even double majors across disciplines such as engineering, science, humanities and management, allowing them to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.
