IIT Roorkee hosts international conference on hydro and renewable energy
IIT Roorkee is hosting a two-day conference on 'Hydro and Renewable Energy- Net Zero Carbon Energy Systems' on October 17 and 18.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and department of hydro and renewable energy (HRED) organises a two-day international conference on hydro and renewable energy (ICHRE 2022) on October 17 and 18 at the IIT Roorkee campus.
The conference will be providing a platform for international and national experts from the industry to discuss ways to achieve net-zero carbon energy systems. The theme of the conference aligns with that of prime minister Narendra Modi’s commitment at UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow to create net zero carbon energy systems in India by 2070.
There will be five technical sessions on various topics like- The role of hydro energy and and pumped storage hydro in power sector decarbonization, advances in established renewable energy technologies, upcoming renewable energy technologies, grid integration challenges and opportunities, role of distributed energy resources in net-zero carbon energy systems, policies and regulations for achieving net zero carbon goals and negative emission technologies. All the topics chosen for the conference have been selected to cover all aspects of energy systems.
The keynote addresses on day 1 of the conference were delivered by chief engineer at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USA, Vahan Gevorgian, and the president of India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), Reji Kumar Pillai. On day 2, the director of IIT Delhi, Rangan Banerjee and the chairman and managing director of Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO), SR Narasimhan will be delivering their keynote addresses.
There are two panel sessions organised for both days of the conference. Day one at the conference will have a panel discussion on 'technologies for achieving net-zero carbon energy systems'. On day 2, the Institute has scheduled a panel discussion on 'policies for achieving net-zero carbon energy systems’. Both panels will be moderated by Arun Kumar, HRED.
Addressing the inaugural session, IIT Roorkee, Officiating Director, M. L. Sharma, said: “The Institute is proud to host such international conferences. ‘Net zero carbon energy systems are vital to address climate change, the impact of which is becoming more and more visible the world over. I am sure this conference will lead to research collaborations, partnerships, and outcomes that will provide a boost to the development of new technologies in Hydro and Renewable Energy.”
