NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay issued anti-discrimination guidelines that emphasize the importance of respecting each student's privacy and identity, particularly when it comes to asking about the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced rank or any information related to their caste or socio-economic background.
In order to create a harmonious and respectful environment the institute aims to create strong bonds among students, regardless of factors such as caste, religion, or socio-economic status.
"It is equally inappropriate for students to ask other students about their JEE (Advanced) ranks/GATE-scores, or any other information that may reveal the caste or other related aspects. While the student asking the question may feel it is innocent, and it may be driven purely by curiosity, asking the question can often have an adverse impact on the other student. Asking could appear like an attempt to find the caste, and may set the stage for discrimination", reads the official notice.

To ensure a pleasant atmosphere on campus, IIT Bombay has suggested that students initiate interactions and bonding based on common interests, such as department, sports, music, movies, and hobbies. Moreover, IIT Bombay strictly prohibits the exchange or forwarding of messages that are abusive, hateful, casteist, sexist, or exhibit bigotry, both online and in person.

Recently, IITB student Darshan Solanki allegedly committed suicide a day after the semester exams ended. Solanki's mother said that during a conversation Darshan told his sister that there was caste-based discrimination at the institute and when his friends came to know of his caste, there was a change in their behaviour towards him.
According to a statement provided by a senior student of IITB, Solanki inquired about the procedure for changing room. Solanki mentioned that his roommate had stopped talking after they shared their ranks.
As per the IIT Bombay anti-discrimination guidelines, violations of these guidelines can result in severe consequences and the institute expects all students to show politeness and sensitivity towards each other's feelings.
By adhering to these principles, IIT Bombay envisions a campus environment where every student can have a pleasant and productive stay, fostering a sense of belonging within the campus.
