'JNU vs Delhi Police': Student groups protest against ABVP; some detained

In yet another incident at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a clash broke out between left-affiliated student groups and the Delhi Police at the Paschimabad (West) gate on Saturday evening, injuring several students and personnels.

The brawl occurred when JNU students were marching towards Vasant Kunj Police Station to file an FIR against ABVP members for allegedly assaulting JNUSU president.

The students' organisation has accused Delhi Police of a “brutal assault” on students, while the police claimed that the protesters broke-passed the barricades and injured personnel.

“In front of the Vasant Kunj SHO, ABVP goons hurled casteist, islamophobic and misogynistic abuses at the JNUSU president and female members. The assault by ABVP workers continued for an hour, while the Delhi police stayed silent. Somehow, JNU students managed to rescue the JNUSU members and president. We demand an FIR against the ABVP members. We also want the SHO Vasant Kunj to be relieved from duties,” Aditi, activist, AISA told Careers360.

Moreover, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has also alleged that the police "pulled female students by their hair and manhandled them, including by male personnel," as reported by the PTI.

Whereas, Amit Goel, deputy commissioner of Police (Southwest) denied the allegations and said that around 70-80 students, including women were present at the JNU West Gate around 6 pm and "broke police barricades, manhandled personnel, and obstructed traffic" on Nelson Mandela Marg, the PTI report added.

"A total of 28 students, including JNUSU office bearers, were detained to prevent any untoward incident," Goel said, adding that six police personnel were injured, the report said.
