JNUSU to host homage ceremony for Sitaram Yechury today; venue, timing
Sitaram Yechury's family has donated his body to AIIMS for educational and research purposes.

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) will host a homage ceremony today, September 13, to honor the memory of Comrade Sitaram Yechury. As per the official annoucemnet, the body of Sitaram Yechur will be kept at the JNUSU Union Office Teflas at 4:00 pm. Sitaram Yechury, aged 72, passed away on September 12 at AIIMS, New Delhi, following a prolonged illness.
The poster shared by the union reads, "Long live Com. Sitaram Yechury. The body of Com. Sitaram Yechury would be kept for paying homage in JNUSU office today at 4 PM at Union Office Teflas." This announcement invites students and faculty to gather at the office to honor the late leader.
Political journey of Sitaram Yechury
Sitaram Yechury, a prominent figure in Indian politics, began his journey with the Students' Federation of India (SFI) at JNU. He was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in 1984 and later to the Politburo in 1992.
Leadership and contributions
Yechury served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2005 to 2017 and was elected as the CPI(M) General Secretary in April 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. He played a key role in the formation of the opposition INDIA bloc and was regarded as a mentor to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Sitaram Yechury's Death: Family donates body to AIIMS for medical research and education
On August 19, Yechury was sent to AIIMS to get treatment for a chest infection that resembled pneumonia. He was seriously ill and dependent on oxygen. His lungs were infected with fungus, according to sources. The CPI(M) announced his death with deep sorrow, thanking the medical staff for their care. Yechury's body will be kept at the CPI(M) headquarters for public homage before being donated to AIIMS for medical research. Yechury's family has donated his body to AIIMS for teaching and research purposes, the hospital said in a statement.
"It is with profound grief that we announce the passing away of CPI(M) general secretary, our beloved Comrade Sitaram Yechury, at 3.03 pm today, 12th September, at the AIIMS, New Delhi. He was suffering from a respiratory tract infection which developed complications," CPI(M) said in a post on X.
