The Karnataka School Education Department has launched Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) classes in all Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) schools across the state, including 32 composite schools, to strengthen foundational learning among young children. As part of the initiative, the department will appoint guest teachers on a temporary or contract basis for pre-primary classes and provide one ayah/helper in each school to assist children.

According to the department, the initiative aims to provide quality early childhood education and care while ensuring a supportive learning environment for children enrolled in the pre-primary section.

Guest teachers for ECCE classes

The department said ECCE classes have now been introduced in all PM SHRI schools under its jurisdiction. To support classroom teaching, guest teachers will be engaged specifically for pre-primary education. These teachers will be responsible for delivering age-appropriate learning activities and strengthening the foundation for children's future schooling.

In addition to academic support, every PM SHRI school implementing ECCE will be provided with one ayah or helper to assist children with their daily needs and ensure their safety and well-being during school hours.

Play-based, child-centred learning

The ECCE programme will follow a child-centred and play-based learning approach to support the overall development of young children. The curriculum will include activities that promote creativity, exploration and problem-solving, while integrating basic literacy, numeracy, language skills, arts and physical development.

The teaching methods will also focus on each child's individual learning pace, interests and developmental needs to ensure a strong foundation for future learning.

The official announcement, shared by the Karnataka School Education Department through its X platform, said the ECCE programme is being implemented across all PM SHRI schools, including 32 composite schools. The department highlighted that the appointment of guest teachers and support staff will help improve the quality of teaching and care provided to children in the pre-primary section.

The introduction of ECCE classes is expected to strengthen foundational literacy, numeracy and socio-emotional development among young learners while ensuring they receive dedicated care and support during their early years of education.
