Kolkata doctor murder case: IMA meets health minister, demands security stipulations in NMC's medical colleges

IMA signed an agreement with NMC demanding increase in security measures in medical colleges. The health minister accepted the NMC stipulations on college security.
NEW DELHI : The Indian Medical Association (IMA) along with members and the National Medical Commission (NMC) submitted an agreement to bring security stipulations for medical colleges across India. The agenda of the meeting was to declare – all the hospitals in the country as safe, a central law against violence in colleges, and NMC to bring security stipulations for medical colleges.
“The IMA team, comprising of National President Dr R V Asokan, HSG Dr Anilkumar J Nayak, past national president Dr Vinay Aggarwal, and HFS Dr. Shitij Bali, met with Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda at 2:30 pm, accompanied by Apurva Chandra, secretary (Health & Family Welfare, GoI), and Dr Atul Goel (Director General, DGHS, GoI). During the meeting, a memorandum was submitted demanding to declare hospitals across the country as safe zones, a central law against violence, and NMC to bring in security stipulations for recognition of medical colleges,” the press release read.

Response of Health Minister
The health minister stated that the Indian government would take into account the first two requests and that he would accept the security requirements set forth by the NMC. The IMA advocated for improved living and working circumstances for resident medical doctors. The minister also gave NMC’s request a favorable response.
IMA considers this meeting as the first step in the resolution of the issue. However, IMA still awaits the final word from the Government on the first two demands.
A body of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found. The Kolkata doctor was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital. According to her colleagues, she had gone to the seminar hall to rest after her dinner.
