NEET Counselling 2021: MCC notifies changes in AIQ counselling process for both UG, PG

NEW DELHI: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has notified changes in All India Quota (AIQ) counselling for both 15% UG or undergraduate and 50% PG or postgraduate seats in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for MBBS admissions.

“This is for information to all the participating states, union territories (UTs), participating universities, institutes, colleges and the participating candidates of NEET UG, PG that, MCC will be conducting online 4 rounds of All India Quota Counselling (AIQ Round 1, AIQ Round 2, AIQ Mop-Up Round and AIQ Stray Vacancy Round) from the academic year 2021-22 onwards in compliance of the order dated December 16, 2021 in special leave to appeal before the Supreme Court of India,” the MCC said in a notification on its official website.

It also informed the students that no AIQ seats will be reverted back to the respective states after the completion of AIQ Round 2.

The decision comes after a petition filed by two Kerala NEET aspirants in Supreme Court demanding it to direct MCC to “keep AIQ for medical admission as a separate pool, to be filled up only by candidates on the basis of all India rank list or in the alternative to conduct more rounds of counselling or mop-up rounds to fill up the seats.”

The petitioners said they were denied admission to MBBS through NEET 2020 despite scoring higher all India ranks of 15979 and 17131 with NEET score 609 and 606 respectively out of 720.

1,730 seats out of 5,555 total seats were sent back to the State Quota after Round 2 was concluded and were filled by students with comparatively lesser marks, the petitioners claimed.

This happens because the 85% state quota counselling is not completed before the second round of AIQ counselling and thus students under state quota do not join and rather apply for AIQ remaining seats, the petitioners reasoned.
