NEET UG 2025 Counselling: MCC seeks NRI quota proof by July 26, clarifies ward, guardian rules

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has asked candidates applying under Non-Resident Indian (NRI) quota to submit required documents by July 26. This includes NRIs, children or ward of NRIs, Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), or Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who have not submitted their nationality during NTA NEET UG 2025 registration.

Candidates who have submitted their nationality as ‘NRI’ in NEET UG application form 2025 are not required to send their documents again. However, the original documents will be verified at the time of reporting at the allotted college.

The MCC had earlier announced the NEET UG NRI quota admission policy and warned candidates against submitting fake or forged documents.

Applicants have been instructed to send scanned copies to MCC on email ID – ug.nri.mcc@gmail.com – from July 25 to July 26 by 7 pm. Candidates must note that the NEET UG round 1 counselling registration 2025 will be closed on July 28. The list of documents to be submitted to MCC:

• NEET score card of candidate issued by NTA
• Self-attested declaration stating that the candidate is NRI/ OCI/ PIO or child of NRI parents.
• OCI/ PIO card of the candidate, if applicable
• NRI Embassy certificate of parent or candidate.

The format of the self-attested declaration form is given on the official website, mcc.nic.in.

What is an NRI certificate?

“A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Certificate is a document issued by Missions/ Posts abroad in favour of Indian citizens abroad for the purpose of ratification of the NRI status of the applicant for different purposes, including educational benefits,” the Consulate General of India, San Francisco, said.

Seats reserved in Educational Institutions under NRI quota also include Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO).

Who is an NRI?

A non-resident Indian or children or wards of NRI will be eligible for admission under the NRI quota.

• The applicant must be an Indian national with a valid Indian passport.
• The applicant must have completed a period of stay of more than 182 days in the country of residence of the applicant.

‘Ward’ shall include only a ‘minor’ who is under the bonafide guardianship of a NRI. Evidence of bonafide guardianship must be produced before the Mission/ Post by such person.

It clarified that “simply showing that the guardian has looked after the student will not qualify relatives as guardians. An Affidavit to the effect must be produced before the Mission/ Post by such person”.

Who is not a legal guardian?

The following categories of guardians will not be considered as ‘bonafide guardians’ and will be excluded from admission of students under NRI quota.

First degree relation of the student - Real brother and sister over and above the mother-father of the first degree relation, is NRI and residing abroad ordinarily; or

Nearest relation - Uncle and aunt; maternal uncle and maternal aunt; grandfather and grandmother; maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother; first degree maternal and paternal cousins.
