NEET UG Counselling 2026: Reservation policy for MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing admissions explained

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) follows a reservation policy for admission to MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing programmes through the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 counselling process. According to the official notification, the reservation policy under the All India Quota (AIQ) and central medical institutions will follow the government norms. The general category candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS) will have 10% of seats reserved; Other Backward Classes - Non-Creamy Layer (OBC- NCL) candidates have 27% of seats in every course.

MBBS Counselling 2026: Reservation policy for SC, ST, PwBD

There will be 15% reserved seats in every course for Scheduled Caste (SC) MBBS aspirants, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe (ST), and 5% horizontal reservation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD),

“Candidates who want to avail the benefits of PwBD reservation in admission to undergraduate courses will be governed as per NMC guidelines (Appendix-VI) and subsequent amendments from time to time,” according to the official notification.

The reservation policy further states that MBBS admissions under the state quota in government medical colleges, universities, institutions, private medical colleges, universities, and private medical colleges will be governed by the reservation policy of the respective state and union territory.

Those applying under the OBC-NCL category should have a valid OBC-NCL certificate in reference with the latest guidelines of the government for claiming seats.

Candidates claiming the SC or ST reservation should possess a valid SC, ST certificate in consonance with the latest guidelines of the government.

NEET UG Counselling 2026: Documents to avail reservation benefit

Furthermore, for the category of persons with benchmark disabilities (PwBD), 5% horizontal reservation will be followed for admission to MBBS and other UG medical programmes.

Those claiming the PwBD reservation must fulfil the eligibility conditions under the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.

PwBD candidates seeking admission to MBBS and other medical programmes must submit a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card or disability certificate, along with other prescribed documents during counselling.

Notably, for admission to AIIMS, PwBD candidates will be evaluated by the institute’s medical board.

“The extent of “specified disability” in a person shall be assessed in accordance with the “Guidelines for the purpose of assessing the extent of specified disability in a person included under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016,” the NEET UG 2026 counselling guidelines read.

Candidates must note that the benefit of reservation will be given to them subject to verification of documents. If it is discovered at any stage that a candidate has used a false, fake or incorrect document or has furnished false, incorrect or incomplete information in order to avail the benefit of reservation, then such a candidate shall be excluded from all admission processes, it added.

In addition, the MCC will provide the benefit of reservation for MBBS admissions to be given to those classes, castes or tribes which are in the respective central list published by the government from time to time.
