NMC seeks details on suicide, resignation, working hours of medical students from colleges

NEW DELHI : The National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked all medical colleges to submit details on number of medical students who died by suicide, gave resignation along with the working hours and weekly off given to medical students for the last five years. Medical institutes have been asked to share the details by October 7.

NMC has formed an anti-ragging cell with Dr Aruna V Vanikar, president of Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) to address the issues of ragging in medical institutes across the country. The Commission said that while all cases of suicide or suicidal tendency among students are not linked to ragging, most of them do. Therefore, NMC asked colleges to submit details on:

• Number of students who have committed suicide during the last five years (department-wise in respect of PG students).
• Number of students who have left the college or institute during the last five years (department-wise in respect of PG students).
• Details regarding the working hours and weekly off given to students.

Anti-ragging committee

“National Medical Commission has constituted an anti-ragging committee with Dr Aruna V Vanikar, President, UGMEB as the chairperson of the committee. Anti-ragging committee in its first meeting held on September 27, reviewed the ragging complaints received from the medical students or parents of medical students and has expressed its concern over incidents of suicide and suicidal tendency among the medical students,” Aujender Singh, Deputy Secretary, Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) and member secretary, anti-ragging committee said in a notification to principals, deans of medical colleges, institutes.

In a separate notification, NMC said that the anti-ragging committee has taken a serious view on the increasing incidents of ragging and its consequences leading to suicidal tendency among the medical students. In order to facilitate the medical students to lodge the complaints with the NMC also in addition to the concerned colleges, institutes, an email ID has been created as – antiragging@nmc.org.in , the notification added.

NMC asked all colleges to give publicity to the email ID by publishing it on their website and displaying it in places such as hostel, mess, classroom, library, lecture halls, common room etc.
