NEW DELHI: Students of Delhi University (DU), staged a protest against the online open book exam, or OBE, outside the Arts Faculty on Monday.
The protest is a part of “National Protest Day" being organised by the All India Students’ Association, or AISA, a left-leaning students' group against the online examination. Students have been asked to participate in online and offline mode as per their convenience.
Students from various students’ groups gathered to mark their dissent holding placards which said “say no to online exams”. Few teachers also joined the protest.
Due to the ongoing lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus, the university is conducting exams for final year students in online mode which will commence from July 1 . Exams for students in intermediate semesters have been cancelled. Such students will be evaluated based on their past performance.
Around 11 students and two teachers returning from the protest were picked up by the Maurice Nagar Police for violating the lockdown rules, a student told Careers360. They were released after signing an affidavit to comply with section 144 imposed in the area.
Protesting OBE
Since the announcement of the examination, students and teachers from the university have voiced their discontent against conducting the online exams . “Students’ health is more important than exams. Cancel both online and offline exams,” said a notice issued by AISA.
The students are demanding an alternative mode of evaluation for all students as students from disadvantaged backgrounds will not be able to appear for the online exams .
Requesting the cancellation of “discriminatory” online exams, students from Kirorimal College, Zakir Hussain College, Campus Law Centre, Indraprastha College and Miranda House have written open letters to the Vice Chancellor.
