Rain Disrupts Classes: Schools, colleges closed in several Kerala districts amid heavy rainfall alert

Educational institutions in multiple districts of Kerala remained closed today following weather alerts and rain-related concerns. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad and Kozhikode districts of Kerala for the coming days. In response, the district collectors declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges and Kendriya Vidyalayas.

According to Onmanorama reports, Kasaragod district, where rivers are overflowing and several low-lying areas are flooded, will observe a holiday for all schools, colleges, tuition centres, madrasas, anganwadis and special classes. However, all previously scheduled examinations, including university and departmental tests, will be held as per the original timetable.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in effect for Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki and Alappuzha districts, with rainfall expected between 7 cm and 15 cm. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall across Kerala until July 22 and warned of strong winds, with speeds up to 50 kmph, until July 20.

Recently, schools up to Class 12 in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district were closed after the India IMD issued a warning for heavy rainfall in the region. The decision was taken by Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarth, who directed all government, private and minority-run schools to suspend classes for the day, citing student safety.

Around the same time, in Maharashtra, the Nagpur district administration also announced the closure of all schools, anganwadis, colleges and coaching institutes on July 9. The order, issued by district collector Vipin Itankar, applied to all government and private educational institutions, including those under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
