SC allows 8 medical colleges from Bihar, UP, Jharkhand to admit students

NEW DELHI, JUNE 22: The Supreme Court has excused eight government medical colleges by permitting them to admit students for the MBBS course during the current academic year 2018-19. the eight colleges from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand have been allowed to admit fresh batch on an assurance that they would take necessary steps to remove all the deficiencies within three months time.

The three state governments had moved to the SC stating that 800 MBBS seats would otherwise go waste. A Vacation Bench of Justices S Abdul Nazeer and Indu Malhotra passed the allowed the petition specifying that this order should not be treated as a ‘precedent’.

The concerned Principal Secretary of the State shall be hauled for contempt if the colleges fail to follow the order.
The colleges included in the counseling this year with the relaxation are Government Allopathic Medical College, Banda; Government Medical College, Saharanpur; Government Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital, Azamgarh; Rajkiya Medical College, Jalaun; MGM Medical College ,Jharkhand, Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College, Gaya, Vardhman Institute of Medical Sciences, Pawapuri Nalanda and Government Medical College, Bettiah, all the three from Bihar.

The order said, “If the deficiencies are not removed within the period specified, the Principal Secretary of each of the States will be held personally responsible for non-compliance with the orders passed by this court.”

Dr. (Prof.) A. A. C. Srivastava, Dean, MGM Medical College, Jharkhand said, “We have already started the procedure for enhancing our infrastructure and faculty demand. The MCI representatives re-evaluated our college last day, and we are positive about fulfilling the demands put forward by them. Though there was a cut-down of 50 MBBS seats compared to the previous years, we are happy to admit the 100 freshers this year. We have started the counselling procedure for the permitted seats too. An increase in the number of PG seats to 57, across different disciplines is what we will be looking forward to, now”

Further proceedings on the matter are scheduled for September 25, 2018.
