UGC asks universties, colleges to implement 'gender champions' guidelines soon

Gender Champions can be boys, girls or transgender above 16 years of age enrolled in educational institutions.
NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines to universities and their affiliated colleges, urging them to nominate 'Gender Champions' and implement the "Guidelines for Gender Champions in Educational Institutions." This initiative aims to promote inclusivity and raise awareness about gender issues on campuses.
The UGC has also asked the universities and the affiliated colleges to fill up the online compliance details and submit the same at saksham.ugc.ac.in.

"In order to promote gender equality, guaranteed by Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, there is a need to change the mode of interaction at all levels- home, school, college, University, workplace, and so on. The Government of India. in order to increase the outreach for creating an environment that fosters equal treatment, envisages of Gender Champions in all educational institutions across the country", UGC secretary Professor Manish R Joshi stated in a letter.
"Gender Champions can be both boys and girls, transgender above 16 years of age enrolled in educational institutions. Gender Champions are envisaged as responsible leaders who will facilitate an enabling environment within their schools/colleges/academic institutions where girls are treated with dignity and respect", the letter further added.

The implementation of the guidelines will help to achieve long-term sustainable change. The Ministry of Women and Child Development, has come out with a badge for Gender Champion which is available on its website and also on My GovPortal.
