UGC: ‘Desist’ from discriminating against SC, ST students

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued an advisory against caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions. It asks institutions look into such cases seriously to avoid discrimination against students from the historically marginalised Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC and ST) on grounds of their backgrounds.
The UGC has issued a notice stating that the officials and faculty members of educational institutions should “desist from any act of discrimination against SC/ST students on grounds of their social origin”.
It has also asked institutions to create a page on their website for lodging such complaints by SC, ST students and also place a complaint register in the registrar or principal office for the purpose. “If any such incident comes to the notice of the authorities, action should be taken against the erring official/faculty members promptly,” the UGC notice reads.
The UGC has also advised that the university and colleges should ensure that no staff of the institution indulges in any kind of discrimination against any community or category of students.
The UGC notice states: “The University may constitute a committee to look into the discrimination complaints received from the SC/ST/OBC Students /Teachers and non-teaching staff.”
It has also asked institutions to advise their officials and faculty members to be more sensitive while dealing with incidents of caste discrimination.
