TeamLease EdTech flags shift in hiring patterns; proof-of-work and adaptability emerge as major employability markers
India’s fresher hiring market is undergoing a structural shift, with employers increasingly moving away from degree-based screening toward skills-first recruitment models, TeamLease EdTech Career Outlook report for first half of the year (HY1) 2026 found. The report indicates that companies are placing higher emphasis on practical ability, digital readiness and demonstrable work experience over academic qualifications alone.
The findings show that hiring decisions are now being shaped by candidates’ adaptability, technical understanding and ability to apply knowledge in real workplace settings. Employer demand is expanding beyond traditional IT roles, with sectors such as marketing, BFSI, consulting and operations also seeking digitally skilled freshers.
The report said fresher employability is being increasingly tied to proof-of-work, including internships, projects, portfolios, apprenticeships and hackathons. It also noted a broader shift from campus-focused recruitment to ecosystem-based hiring models.
Employability Drivers: AI, data and adaptability
Among the major skills highlighted, AI fluency, cybersecurity awareness , cloud and DevOps capability, data intelligence, digital marketing analytics and workplace adaptability emerged as strong hiring priorities. Employers are also increasingly evaluating behavioural readiness and learning agility.
Key trends identified in the report include:
- AI and automation tools becoming relevant beyond core tech roles
- Rising entry-level demand in cybersecurity and cloud operations
- Marketing roles shifting toward analytics and performance-based skills
- Data handling and business intelligence becoming cross-sector priorities
- Portfolios and practical exposure gaining importance over resumes alone
The report also said hiring systems are changing in structure, with recruitment moving from “degree and resume filters” to “skills, proof-of-work and behaviour.”

Employer intent to hire freshers has reportedly reached 73% in HY1 2026, signalling stronger demand for entry-level talent. However, opportunities are increasingly concentrated among candidates who can demonstrate industry-ready skills and adaptability rather than relying solely on academic credentials.
The report was conducted between November 2025 and January 2026 with responses from 1,051 employers across sectors.
