BHU students protest even as classes begin for final-year students

NEW DELHI : The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) witnessed protests from some sections of students on Monday when the university started hybrid online-offline classes. The protesting students are reported to be first-year and second-year students who demanded that the university start classes for all students, according to Asian News International .

BHU said that officials communicated with the students to maintain order and requested students to consider not causing inconvenience to the patients visiting the university hospital.

BHU, in a statement, said: “ Some students attempted to disrupt the movement at the main entrance of the university. Constant efforts were made by the members of the Proctoral Board to maintain order and to keep the traffic smooth.”

“At the same time, an attempt was made to convince the protesting students that the interruption of traffic at the main gate caused inconvenience not only to the common people but also to the patients coming to the hospital,” the university said in a statement.

The university said that “appropriate decisions” will be taken by the administration regarding phased reopening of classes “in consideration with the guidelines issued by the Government of India”.

BHU said: “it is appealed to the students to cooperate with the university administration keeping in mind the academic environment of the university and the interest of the patients coming for treatment from far and wide.”

BHU had reopened hostels for final-year students on February 17 and hybrid classes on February 22 after a meeting by the university officials on February 5 to discuss the phased reopening of the university.
