NEW DELHI: The Cambridge University Press and Assessments Group managing director of International Education, Rod Smith, spoke to Careers360 about Cambridge curriculum, competitive examinations, integration of AI, admission in top UK universities and more. Edited excerpts from the conversation:

Why is Cambridge a strong choice for schools in India?

Cambridge is one of the best-kept secrets in India, with over 790 schools delivering the Cambridge curriculum and growing by approximately 100 schools annually. India is one of the fastest-growing markets for Cambridge, driven by an insatiable demand for high-quality education. Historically, Cambridge was chosen for its international recognition, allowing students to study abroad at top universities. Today, around 50% of Cambridge students stay in India where Cambridge qualifications are widely recognised by leading universities and competitive exams.

How does Cambridge prepare students for competitive exams?

Cambridge has launched pathways within its curriculum, such as bridge-courses that prepare students for high-stakes competitive exams for technology, medical, and many such institutes. The curriculum focuses on both knowledge and application skills, ensuring students are equipped to think critically and creatively – essential for success in these exams. Students no longer need to switch to local boards to pursue competitive exams as Cambridge provides comprehensive preparation.

What makes the Cambridge curriculum unique?

Cambridge combines knowledge-rich content with critical thinking, problem-solving, and creative application skills. It prepares students not just for academic success but also for real-world challenges. While programmes like Young Pioneers foster entrepreneurial skills, Climate Quest addresses climate literacy through applied learning. Additionally, well-being is embedded into the curriculum, recognising the importance of mental health alongside academic achievement.

At what age can students join the Cambridge curriculum?

The Cambridge pathway offers flexibility for students to join at multiple stages, from early years (age 3) to primary, lower secondary, IGCSE, and A-levels. Increasingly, schools in India are adopting Cambridge’s primary and lower secondary pathways to build foundational skills early.

How is Cambridge expanding in tier 2 and tier 3 cities?

Over 50% of Cambridge schools in India are now located in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, reflecting growing demand beyond metropolitan areas. Cambridge is working to support these schools by developing teachers, building communities, and addressing challenges such as access to resources and collaboration opportunities.

How has technology transformed Cambridge’s approach post-COVID?

Post-COVID, Cambridge has embraced digital transformation across teaching, learning, and assessments. Cambridge will soon launch digital high-stakes exams, moving beyond traditional paper-based methods. Digital literacy is deeply embedded in all subjects, preparing students for future careers influenced by AI and technology. It also connects schools with virtual teachers where subject-specific expertise is lacking.

How does Cambridge integrate AI into its curriculum?

Cambridge embeds AI into subjects rather than teaching it separately, ensuring students understand its impact across disciplines. Students use AI in projects, such as the International Project Qualification (IPQ), where they explore topics like "Is AI the end of civilisation?" This approach fosters critical thinking and prepares students for a world increasingly shaped by AI.

How does Cambridge ensure quality teaching materials?

While we do not own or run schools, we provide high-quality teaching material aligned with its curriculum. These materials focus on global standards, integrating modern approaches to learning, and supporting teachers in delivering impactful education.

What role does Cambridge play in India’s educational ecosystem?

Cambridge aims to be a valuable part of India’s educational ecosystem, complementing strong national education systems like CBSE and ICSE. While Cambridge will remain a smaller segment of the market, its focus is on providing exceptional quality and making international education accessible to more people – particularly in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

Is there an advantage for Indian students adopting the Cambridge curriculum, especially those seeking admission in top UK universities?

Cambridge students go to the best universities globally, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Japan. However, it’s not easy. Students must work hard as the Cambridge curriculum is rigorous and challenging but it also prepares students exceptionally well, equipping them with both knowledge and application skills.

While many Indian students choose Cambridge for its international recognition, around 50% of students now stay in India to study at leading Indian universities.

How does Cambridge assess students, particularly in senior programmes like IGCSE and A-Level?

Cambridge assessments are structured across various stages of the curriculum, culminating in high-stakes exams at ages 16, 17, and 18 through International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)s, Advanced Subsidiary (AS), and A-Levels. These exams are predominantly written but include practicals for science subjects and coursework for others. Cambridge also offers project-based qualifications like the International Project Qualification (IPQ), allowing students to demonstrate skills beyond traditional exams. Exams remain the most reliable and valid method of assessment, trusted by universities and employers globally.

How does Cambridge help parents and students choose the right stream after high school?

One of Cambridge’s strengths is the flexibility it offers, with over 70 subjects at IGCSE and 60 subjects at A-Level. Students can select subjects based on their interests and strengths rather than being forced into predefined combinations. Cambridge works closely with schools and career counsellors to guide students toward pathways that align with their passions and aspirations. This flexibility ensures students can pursue their dreams while meeting university requirements worldwide.
