100 days to CAT 2022: How to prepare?

It is four months short of the CAT exam day. If candidates follow the right strategy and study plan, 100 days is enough to not just achieve a significantly high score but become a CAT topper. If your target is IIMs and other top MBA colleges, you must score around the 99+ percentile. Here is how to create a CAT 2022 study plan that helps in achieving the target CAT exam percentile and securing MBA admission to their preferred college.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

This section is expected to have 24 questions of easy to a moderate level in the CAT exam 2022. Some questions may be difficult. Candidates can avoid difficult or tricky ones. Attempting 10-15 questions accurately can fetch you a good score in CAT MBA. According to experts, candidates have scored 100 percentile in MBA CAT entrance by accurately answering 11 questions in every section. The CAT 2022 preparation should be around topics listed in the CAT syllabus, such as para jumble, par summary, odd one out, and vocabulary. Give 2 days every week for Verbal Ability topics, such as logs, functions, mixtures & allegations, set theorems, Venn diagrams, etc. Just a single good book on CAT exam preparation VARC will be sufficient to cover the entire section.

Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)

Last year 20 questions were there in the CAT DILR section. 10 questions each were asked from DI and LR. Candidates who attempted 10 questions managed to fetch above 95+ percentile in DILR. So if a candidate is bad at logical reasoning, they can compensate in the DI section. Some of the important topics to focus on in DILR section are:

  • Data Interpretation: Approximation, table, line graph, pie chart, bar graph, bubble graph, trilingual DI, funnel DI, data rectification/identification based DI, time zone based DI, etc

  • Logical Reasoning: Arrangements, direction, blood relations, puzzle, set theory, routes & network, team formation, number series, dice, conditional LR, game & tournament, scheduling, miscellaneous, etc

Quantitative Ability

After VARC, the highest number of questions will be asked from the quant section in the CAT exam. 22 questions are expected to be asked in this section. Candidates should target to solve 12 to 15 questions correctly. Compared to the first two sections, QA topics take a major chunk in the CAT syllabus. Candidates are advised so study selectively, solving questions from topics that will be asked in the test. They should focus more on the CAT important topics for QA as given below.

  • Vedic math (1 hour on the daily)

  • Geometry: Do questions on lines, triangles, circles, mensuration, etc.

  • Arithmetic: Focus on profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time, speed, and distance and time and work

  • Modern Math: Solve questions from permutation and combination 1, permutation and combination 2, probability and progression

  • Algebra: Linear equations, quadratic equations, etc. are most important topics to study

  • Give two days for verbal ability (VA) every week

Bonus tip: Candidates should learn the skills to categorize questions into easy, moderate and difficult. First do the easy questions and then the moderate. Difficult questions should be attempted last.

CAT 2022 mock tests and previous year papers

The magic mantra to scoring above the 99+ percentile in the CAT exam is taking more mock tests and solving CAT's previous year's question papers. Taking mocks will help you assess your CAT exam preparation as well as improve your accuracy level and problem-solving speed. If a candidate wants to do all questions, they will have to solve a question in 2 minutes. But no candidate can answer all questions, nor is it advisable to do so. 100 percentile in CAT 2022 can be achieved even by answering 13 questions accurately from each section. Just do half of the paper, and you will get 99 percentile. Never avoid mocks.
