CBSE extends relaxation for students with Class 10 basic maths to opt for mathematics in 11th

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to extend the provision to allow students who studied mathematics standard in Class 10 to opt mathematics in Class 11 for the academic year 2023-24. The CBSE Board relaxed the rule during the COVID-19 pandemic period as a one-time measure.

On January 10, 2019, the board introduced two-level mathematics for the All India Secondary School Examination from the academic session ending in March 2020 onwards. The latest circular comes amid the ongoing CBSE Class 11 admission.

“Students of Class 10 who have studied mathematics standard (041) can offer mathematics (041) in Class 11. In case students who offered mathematics basic (241) in Class 10 are allowed to offer only applied mathematics in Class 11,” as per the 2019 CBSE circular. The rule has been relaxed by the board for the academic session 2023-24.

Therefore, students who were offered mathematics basic (241) will be allowed to opt for mathematics (041) in Class 11. However, “before permitting mathematics in Class 11 to such students, the Head of the Institution should satisfy that the students are having the aptitude and ability to pursue mathematics in Class 11,” the board said.

The exemption is given as a special measure to facilitate the present batch. The CBSE clarified that the circular issued in 2019 will be applicable from 2024.

The CBSE Board introduced the two-level based on the difficulty level, basic and standard - with basic being easier. Students who wish to pursue mathematics in higher studies were given an option to select standard mathematics. It also gave the students option to change from standard in case they fail in exams.
