CLAT 2018: NUALS to compensate test takers who lost time; publish fresh merit in second counselling round

NEW DELHI, JUNE 12: The National University of Advanced Legal Studies Kochi (NUALS) has submitted a formula before the Supreme Court to determine compensation for the CLAT 2018 takers who lost time on account of technical glitches on the 13 ^th May online paper. The apex court has directed NUALS to apply the compensation formula to all those test takers who lost time. Further, the court also remarked that any changes in merit list arising on the application of formula should be carried out in the second list of CLAT counselling.

The apex court had earlier asked the CLAT 2018 conducting NLU to suggest a formula which can be adopted to compensate all those aggrieved the loss of time while appearing the Common Law Admission Test.

The NUALS had submitted the formula to the vacation bench of Justices UU Lalit and Deepak Gupta.

NUALS also submitted that the formula had been applied to four candidates, only. However, the SC Bench has directed the NLU for application of the formula to all test takers who suffered from the loss of time during the online exam.

The Vacation Bench also made it clear that changes in merit list as a result of this application of compensatory formula should be applied in the CLAT second round counselling.

While the National University of Advanced Legal Studies Kochi (NUALS) announced seat allotment to different National Law Universities basis the merit of students in Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the procedural flaws surfaced yet again with officials not publishing the complete seat allotment.

Pursuant to the numerous complaints raised against the conduct of CLAT 2018 before the Supreme Court, a Grievance Redressal Committee was constituted by NUALS Kochi which had submitted its report before the court.

The national level law entrance exam –CLAT, is conducted annually for admissions to around 2300 seats on offer across 19 NLUs.
