The Week In Education: Schools, colleges closed; exams postponed

NEW DELHI: Over the course of the week, as the second wave of COVID-19 struck and swelled, higher and lower education was once again affected. By the end of the week, close to two dozen states had closed schools, over a dozen closed universities and colleges and roughly 20 Class 12 board exams stood cancelled. The entrance exam for postgraduate medicine, NEET PG 2021, had already been postponed as well as the entrance exam for BTech, JEE Main 2021 April session.

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kanpur), Indian Institutes of Management and universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University grappled with COVID-19 cases on campus. By Friday, the situation grew so desperate in Delhi that the government deployed school teachers to hospitals to monitor dead bodies.

Education institutions close: Karnataka, HP, Sikkim

By the beginning of the week, 14 states had closed higher education institutions and postponed exams. More followed.

This week:

• Karnataka closed schools, colleges, educational or training and coaching institutions till May 4.

• Himachal Pradesh extended the closure of all educational institutes till May 1.

• Sikkim announced that all educational institutions in the state will remain closed till April 30

UGC NET 2021 exam, others postponed

• National Testing Agency (NTA) postponed the UGC NET 2021 exam scheduled for May 2.

• University of Mysore, Karnataka postponed the Karnataka State Eligibility Test (KSET) 2021

• Chhattisgarh Professional Examination Board, Raipur (CG Vyapam) postponed CG PET 2021 registration date.

COVID-19: Board exams postponed

Around two dozen school boards have postponed the Class 12 board exams, including the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE 2021) and Indian School Certificate Examinations (ISC 2021). Over 10 boards have cancelled the Class 10 exams.

• The CISCE cancelled ICSE class 10 board exams and withdrew the option for students to appear later.

• Odisha Government has cancelled the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Odisha 10th board examinations. Prior to cancellation, students had staged a protest demanding cancellation.

• Maharashtra Government cancelled the Maharashtra Board SSC exams 2021

• Manipur Government postponed board exams for Classes 10 and 12

• Tamil Nadu Government postponed Class 12 board exams in the state. However, ongoing practical exams will be held as scheduled, the government informed.
