COVID-19: UGC asks universities to put offline exams on hold for May

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked all higher education institutions to not hold offline examinations in May due to the ongoing second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

The UGC through its letter has also informed the institutions that the situation will be assessed again in June and a decision taken on holding offline examinations.

The UGC letter says; “Keeping in view the current scenario of COVID-19, it is requested that Higher Education Institutions may keep the offline examinations in abeyance during May 2021 to avoid physical gathering at the campuses and also to provide much-needed relief to the students, faculty and staff who are presently occupied in fighting COVID-19 in one way or other.”

With regard to online examinations, the UGC has left the educational institutions to decide on holding them after assessing local conditions. The online examinations can be conducted if institutions are prepared in all respects and are following all advisories and guidelines issued by the Central and respective state government, Ministry of Education or the UGC to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Earlier this week, the education ministry asked all centrally-funded institutions, including central universities, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), National Institutes of Technology (NIT) to postpone all offline exams scheduled in May.
