COVID-19: IIT Roorkee asks students, staff to return to their homes

NEW DELHI : After a spike in COVID-19 cases on campus, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has advised its students and staff members residing in non-containment hostels to return home.

Students and project staff in non-containment hostels have been asked to leave by the evening of April 21.

“ In view of the daily new COVID-19 positive cases of students and supporting staff being reported in the hostels, it is not in the best interest of students and project staff to continue staying in the hostels,” an official notice said.

As many states now require an RT-PCR test result, the institute is also conducting tests to ensure safe entry of students in their hometown. A supporting letter from the Dean of Students’ Welfare is being provided to the students to facilitate their travel to their homes.

Earlier on April 8, a total of 89 students tested COVID-19 positive which later rose to 101 active cases on April 15. Three hostels on campus, including Sarojini Bhawan and Kasturba Hostel, have been declared containment zones.

Incidentally, an M.Tech student , Prem Singh, died on April 14 at the IIT Roorkee campus quarantine facility. The student was under quarantine after coming in contact with a COVID-19 positive person but had himself tested negative.
