COVID-19 Lockdown: CBSE may ‘rationalise’ syllabus for Classes 9 to 12

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education, or CBSE, said on Friday that it may “rationalise syllabus” for Classes 9 to 12 for the next academic year. At present, the board is “assessing the situation and loss of time” due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The National Council for Educational Research and Training, or NCERT , has already developed an “alternative academic calendar” for students enrolled in Classes 1 to 5 to follow as they study at home. The council is in the processing of developing similar plans for higher classes as well.
The annual academic schedule has been thrown out of gear by the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The CBSE as well as many state boards have had to either postpone or outright cancel board exams.
The CBSE announced it was postponing the remaining board exams on March 18. On April 1 it announced that it was going to conduct exams only in the 29 most important subjects for Classes 10 and 12. Several state boards, including those of Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, followed suit.
For other classes, many states have elected to simply promote students on the basis of exams that have already been conducted.
The Narendra Modi government enforced a nation-wide lockdown to control the spread of coronavirus from March 25 to April 14. But on the day it was to be lifted, the lockdown was extended to May 3.
