NEW DELHI: An expert committee set up by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) will hold a meeting today to take a decision on Delhi school reopening .
The DDMA on Wednesday submitted a report to the Delhi government and recommended the reopening of schools in a phased manner.
The expert committee in its meeting is expected to discuss and take a decision on the reopening of schools in view of an improved COVID-19 situation. The meeting will be attended by Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, according to PTI.
As per the report submitted by the committee, in the first phase, students in higher classes should be called back for offline classes, followed by middle classes, and finally primary classes.
However, parents are divided over the committee’s plan to reopen schools in the national capital. Some believed its high time schools are reopened as the learning loss is huge and others feared the possible third wave of COVID-19.
CM Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the government wants to reopen schools at the earliest but will also have to ensure students’ safety.
No death due to COVID-19 was recorded in Delhi on Thursday, while 45 fresh cases were reported with a positivity rate of 0.06 per cent, according to data shared by the city health department.
Deputy Chief Minister had sought suggestion from parents, teachers and students regarding offline classes, early this month and received around 35,000 responses. The schools had reopened only for senior classes in the month of January 2021. The rest of the classes have been closed since March 2020.
