Dharmendra Pradhan to launch PMeVIDYA DTH Channel for Indian sign language tomorrow

NEW DELHI: The union minister for education Dharmendra Pradhan will launch a new PM e-VIDYA DTH channel number 31 for Indian Sign Language (ISL) tomorrow, on December 6. The event will be attended by the union minister of state for skill development and entrepreneurship and the state minister of education, Jayant Chaudhary

The event will also witness participation from hearing-impaired (HI) children, HI achievers, ISL-certified interpreters, special educators, and other organisations working for mainstream the hearing-impaired community.

The initiative aims to support the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) which promotes Indian Sign Language to foster a more inclusive educational environment for students.

According to the NEP statement, the Indian Sign Language (ISL) will be standardized across the country, and National and state curriculum materials developed, for use by students with hearing impairment. Local sign languages will be respected and taught as well, where possible and relevant.

New channel to promote ISL language

The new PM e-Vidya channel is devoted to promote Indian Sign Language and has been mainly conceptulized to promote ISL subjects so that the larger students population has access to learning the language.

According to the official statement, the new channel will disseminate learning content for school students (central and state curriculum), teachers, teacher educators, and other stakeholders in various fields including career guidance, mental health, class-wise curricular content, skill training, communication skills, as well as promote sign language as a language subject, just like other verbal languages including Hindi, English, etc.
