DU: Kirori Mal College launches Centre for Disability Research and Training

NEW DELHI: The Delhi University's Kirori Mal College has officially launched today the Centre for Disability Research and Training to promote Disability studies. The Centre has collaborated with Saksham to launch an initiative called Aarohan for creating opportunities to include students with blindness and low vision in higher education.

“The objective of this programme is to create a level playing field for these students by providing reasonable accommodation based on their need-assessment,” a statement from KMC said.

Kirori Mal college today held a ceremony to mark the occasion at its academic auditorium wherein assistive devices like laptops, electronic (refreshable) braille display, daisy players (digital recorders) and tablets were distributed to the visually impaired undergraduate students of the college, as per the KMC statement.

Yogesh Kathuniya, alumnus of Kirori Mal college, who made the country proud by winning a Silver Medal in the recently concluded Tokyo Paralympics, was invited as the chief guest and wished the students good luck through a video message and praised the college for establishing a one-of-a-kind Centre for Disability Studies, the KMC statement said.

The Centre for Disability Research and Training was established in Kirori Mal College this semester, with the aim to enable the students as well as the faculty, to promote Disability as a legitimate field of academic inquiry and work towards a creation of an inclusive society, according to the KMC statement.

“The Centre provides them with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of disability and partake in the process of spreading social awareness of the phenomena in the hope of effecting an attitudinal change in society,” the KMC statement said.

KMC also felicitated two of its alumni - Yogesh Kathuniya and Sharad Kumar for winning silver and bronze medal respectively at the Tokyo Paralympics held this year, during the ceremony.
