Hundreds of Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) staged a protest outside the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) on July 3, demanding immediate allotment of internships, which have been delayed for over five months. FAIMA Doctors Association, while leading the demonstration said that the delay is primarily due to pending financial approval for stipend disbursal.

FAIMA Chief Advisor Dr. Bibhu Anand and National FMG Incharge Dr. Samar Kumar held discussions with DMC officials during the protest. Concerns have been raised that that despite directions from the Supreme Court and the National Medical Commission (NMC) mandating equal stipend for FMGs during internship in Delhi, internship seats have not yet been allotted.

FAIMA claims FMGs had previously approached the DMC multiple times and had also met Delhi Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Singh and submitted representations to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta regarding the issue. However, they never got resolution.

Official update soon

DMC officials reportedly informed the delegation that an official letter and email had been sent to the DMC Registrar for immediate action. FAIMA shares that the pending file is expected to receive financial clearance by July 10.

The association said DMC has assured FMGs that an official update on the internship allotment process will be shared by Tuesday. FAIMA said it remains hopeful that the assurances will translate into prompt action and thanked the FMGs and supporting organisations for participating in the protest.
