Four BDS students of Jamia Millia Islamia awarded STS-ICMR 2023 grant

NEW DELHI: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has awarded four students pursuing BDS at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) with research grants under the Short Term Studentship (STS) scheme for the academic year 2023-24.

The university said the students -- Deepali Garg, Snehal Sharma, Ishita Singh and Tarun Sharma -- were selected from more than 15,000 entries that were received for the ICMR-STS 2023. The four students will carry out research under the guidance of faculty mentors Mohammad Faisal, Shamimul Hasan, Harneet Kaur and Vatchala Rani, the institute said.

The STS programme aims to encourage undergraduate medical and dental students towards research in the health sector. The selected students will be receiving Rs 25,000 per month for a two-month period, wherein they will be familiarised with research methodology and techniques by mentors and faculty involved in a research project.

Jamia Millia Islamia said the faculty of dentistry has been at the forefront of encouraging research among the UG students. In the last nine years, 12 students of the faculty have been awarded the ICMR-STS grant, it added. This grant has been used by the students for research in dental as well as interdisciplinary topics such as COVID-19, temporomandibular joint, aphthous stomatitis, dental erosion and obstructive sleep apnea.

As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023, the dentistry faculty of JMI ranks 10th among dental colleges in the country. The faculty was established 13 years ago. Jamia Millia Islamia is ranked as the third best university in the country according to NIRF 2023.
