GMC Srinagar suspends classes after slanderous post on Prophet Muhammad; JKSA calls for peace

NEW DELHI: Government Medical College Srinagar (GMC Srinagar) has suspended all classes today after a student posted a slanderous social media post regarding the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has condemned the post and demanded FIR against the student to maintain calm.

“The classwork in the Institute shall remain suspended on 06.06.2024 (Thursday). No UG/PG/PhD student, residing outside, will be allowed to enter the campus,” the latest circular read.

“It is to inform that immediate cognisance of the matter was taken by GMC Srinagar administration. Pending enquiry the concerned individual has been suspended with immediate effect,” it said.

Urging students and faculty to maintain peace and tranquility in the campus, the college formed an enquiry committee comprising 13 heads of departments and HOUs to review the matter and take necessary action under rules.

Expressing concerns, the J-K students group said such remarks are not only offensive but also have the potential to disrupt the harmonious fabric of society.

National convener of the JKSA Nasir Khuehami said: "While we condemn the offensive post, we urge everyone to maintain calm and refrain from engaging in any form of violence or retaliation. It is crucial that we address such incidents through the legal provisions in place regarding blasphemy."

He further added that such incidents have been recurring, referencing a similar offensive post by a student of the National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar) a few months ago.

He also urged Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to take strict action against this alleged blasphemous post to set a precedent for the future. "These acts not only hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims but also have the tendency to cause commotion and disrupt peace," he added.
