Gujarat government plans to set up 8 new medical colleges in two years: Report

NEW DELHI: The Gujarat government is planning to set up eight medical colleges in the next two years. The state health department aims to start new medical colleges in Rajpipla, Navsari, Jam Khambhaliya, Botad and Veraval in the next academic year, the Times of India reported.

“The new medical colleges in Morbi, Godhra and Porbandar are expected to start in 2021-22. The inspection process by National Medical Commission (NMC) has been completed and the new medical colleges will add about 150 seats each,” according to the report.

The Union government in 2014 launched a new scheme to set up 157 new medical colleges. Gujarat government’s plan to start new medical colleges is in line with the Centre’s vision.

“On completion, nearly 16,000 undergraduate medical seats would be added. Of these, 6,500 seats have already been created with the functioning of 64 new medical colleges, said the government,” as per the report.

Earlier this month, PM Modi said that the government is making efforts to ensure one medical college or an institution for post-graduate medical education in each district of the country.

According to the official statement, underserved, backward and aspirational districts have been given preference to set up medical colleges.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated nine new medical college in Uttar Pradesh after NMC granted permission.
