IIT Delhi, rural development ministry inks pact to manage MGNREGA project using AI, geospatial technologies

NEW DELHI: The ministry of rural development today signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi to work in applications of geospatial technology and artificial intelligence. The agreement focuses around the ‘BhuPRAHARI’ project, an initiative aimed to monitor and manage assets under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

The assets created under MGNREGA are monitored by using ground and space-based geospatial technologies, along with artificial intelligence. As per the agreement, the project will be executed by the HydroSense lab led by IIT professor Manabendra Saharia. The partnership will enhance the operational efficiency and transparency of MGNREGA projects.

The agreement was signed by rural development ministry joint secretary Amit Kataria and. Manabendra Saharia, IIT Delhi. MoRD secretary Shailesh Kumar Singh and IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee were also present on the occasion.

“The integration of cutting-edge technologies is expected to modernize the way rural development projects are planned, monitored, and executed, ensuring accountability, and optimising resource allocation,” the ministry said. The collaborative effort aims to explore and apply technological solutions to address the challenges faced by rural communities. “Through this partnership, IIT Delhi and MoRD are setting a precedent for how academic institutions and government bodies can work together to foster innovation and drive socio-economic progress,” the ministry added.

The BhuPRAHARI project is set to commence with immediate effect, with both parties eager to translate this vision into reality. IIT director Rangan Banerjee highlighted the institute's dedication to applying scientific research and technological innovations for social good.
