IIT Kharagpur final-year student dies in hostel; second death this year

IIT KGP fourth-year student Aniket Walker was pursuing a dual degree in ocean engineering and naval architecture. April 21 exams rescheduled.
NEW DELHI : A final year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur died on campus. This is the second student death this year. Residing in JC Bose hostel, Aniket Walker was enrolled in the dual degree programme of ocean engineering and naval architecture. Following the incident, IIT KGP has rescheduled the April 21 exams for April 26.
“It is with deepest sorrow that we inform the campus community about the unfortunate demise of a student, Mr. Aniket Walker, fourth year student enrolled in a Dual Degree Programme of Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture and residing in JCB Hall of Residence. The Institute mourns the loss of a bright young life. In this moment of grief, all the stakeholders of IIT Kharagpur extend heartfelt condolence to his family, friends and everyone whose life was touched by his warmth and kindness,” said IIT Kharagpur registrar Amit Jain in an email to students, accessed by Careers360.
While mourning the passing away of ‘beloved student’, the institute urged the students to approach the IIT KGP counselling and support services, available at the hall and institute level.

“In view of this unfortunate incident, the competent authority has decided to reschedule all the exams of April 21, 2025 to April 26, 2025. All other exams shall be conducted as per the notified schedule,” the registrar added.
In January this year, a third-year BTech student Shaon Malik died by suicide in his hostel room. Following the student suicide, the institute announced an internal probe.
