IIT Madras hosts international conference on experimental mechanics; includes topics of national interest

IIT Madras: The three-day international conference began on October 20 and will continue till October 23. Guest speakers to deliver interesting lectures.
NEW DELHI : The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is hosting the International Conference on Experimental Mechanics 2024 in collaboration with the Asian Society of Experimental Mechanics (ASEM) and Indian Society for Applied Mechanics (ISAM). The three-day event commenced from October 20 to 23. During the conference, topics of national interest will be discussed, the official IIT Madras statement said.
Professor V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras inaugurated the conference today, October 21 in the presence of professor Yu-Lung Lo, president of the ASEM, professor K Ramesh, conference chair, the department of applied mechanics and biomedical engineering at IIT Madras, along with other IITM students and researchers.
Topics including ‘Design Validation’ were introduced by professor S Pandian, former director Satish Dhawan, Space Centre SHAR, ISRO. This is crucial for organizations such as ISRO and in the defense and nuclear sectors. Another topic being discussed included ‘In-situ Measurements’, which are used to monitor critical structures built in difficult terrains.
The project architect professor U Saravanan from the department of civil engineering, at IIT Madras will be delivering an invited lecture for students and encourage them to take up complex projects of National importance in their careers, the IIT Madras statement said.
Additionally, professor Ghatu Subhash from the University of Florida, USA, the most sought-after plenary lecturer will be delivering an interesting lecture on ‘Riding the Waves for Designing Innovative Experiments and Probing Material Behaviors’ on October 22, the IITM note added.

Another key aspect of the programme, it was entirely being coordinated through a mobile phone app. The apps provides comprehensive conference information containing abstracts of all papers, schedule in various formats, ability to make one’s own agenda for judicious use of the conference time along with multiple features for easy and enhanced networking among the delegates, the IIT Madras statement adds.
“With No printing of abstracts, proceedings, or even the schedule, the conference is contributing to campus initiatives on sustainability. This is the first time such an initiative has been taken up at IIT Madras.”
While delivering the inaugural address, professor V Kamakoti the director of IIT Madras, said: “I am happy to see eminent experts in experimental mechanics from national laboratories and educational institutions across the world who have won many international awards in their fields of study as well as Vigyan Yuva-Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardee Dr. Digendranath Swain from VSSC, ISRO attending this conference. I am sure the students will greatly benefit from their deliberations to hone up their experimental skills.”
