India, UK sign agreement for student mobility, academic collaboration

NEW DELHI: India and the United Kingdom (UK) have signed an agreement on Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualification to facilitate student mobility and academic collaboration between higher educational institutions. An agreement has been signed in this regard between James Bowler, permanent secretary of the department of international trade of the UK and K Sanjay Murthy, secretary of higher education, ministry of education, India.

A comprehensive roadmap to 2030 was adopted in May 2021, during the virtual summit between prime minister Narendra Modi and the then prime minister of the UK for bilateral cooperation between the UK and India, in which education plays a vital role. "In light of India’s National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), the two sides agreed to expand educational by agreeing to a mutual recognition of academic qualifications," said a statement from the education ministry.

The initiative is aimed at facilitating smoother student mobility between the UK and India and helping in the development of collaboration and widening of academic and research collaboration between the higher education institutions of both countries. "Government of India is taking several steps to allow greater international collaboration with countries abroad to facilitate Internationalization of education, which is one of the key areas of focus under the NEP 2020," it said.
