JNU creates endowment fund, appeals to alumni for donations

NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University, in an Executive Council meeting held on February 18, has decided to create the ‘JNU Alumni Endowment Fund’ to fund further developments of the university.

Appealing for contributions, the administration, in a statement shared on February 18, has asked the alumni to be “a benefactor to make JNU a better place”. The administration has set a target of raising Rs 100 crore by the end of the year.

The Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar in the statement said: “We need to ensure that every qualified student is provided with assistance particularly if they come from economically weaker sections.”

Kumar said that alumni contributions make a difference in “enabling deserving students to reach their full potential” and the fund raised will “transform the lives of thousands of students”.

He further stated that higher education is “facing many challenges” and that there is a need to critically assess where “JNU [needs] to be in the decades to come and how to get there”.

Students and faculty at JNU have been on strike from October 28, 2019, since the administration proposed a new fee structure that hiked the room rent and introduced service and utility charges.

The JNU Students Union had filed a plea in the High Court against the revised fee structure. The matter is still pending in court.
