Madhusudan Law University gets UGC recognition: Dharmendra Pradhan

Madhusudan Law College situated in Cuttack was upgraded into a university this April.
NEW DELHI: The Cuttack-based Madhusudan Law University has received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and will soon receive a Central grant, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on social media.
“Happy to share that Madhusudan Law University, Cuttack has been included in the list of Universities established as per section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. The University will soon be able to receive central assistance under the section 12(b) of the UGC Act,” Dharmendra Pradhan said in a social media post.

“The eight decade-old institution named after Utkal Gourab Madhubabu is one of the best law colleges in the region. The central government is committed to transform the higher education landscape as per the vision of PM Shri narendramodi and in line with the NEP,” the education minister added.

Earlier in April, the Madhusudan Law College which is one of the oldest law colleges in Odisha was upgraded into a university. Professor Kamaljeet Singh was appointed as the vice-chancellor of the newly formed university.
According to an official notification shared by Pradhan, the university will have to:
- To ensure that no off campus centre and study centre are opened beyond the territorial jurisdiction of the University as stipulated in the Act and in no case beyond the territory of the state.
- To ensure that no programmes should be offered through franchising arrangements with private institutions.
- To ensure that no study centres are opened through franchises by the University.
- In case the University has already started any off-campus or study centre and the centre operating through franchises outside the State, it must be closed immediately.
- No open and distance learning programmes and on-line programmes shall be started without the prior recognition of UGC.
- MPhil and PhD programmes can be conducted as per the provisions of UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Awards of MPhil/PhD Degrees) Regulations, 2016.
