Maharashtra college: FYJC registrations drop; Nagpur students demand UG re-registration

NEW DELHI: This year, the First Year Junior College registrations in Maharashtra have reduced by 25,000 as compared to the last year. Lesser students have applied for admissions to Class 11 this time, according to The Times of India report. The last date for registration for FYJC was August 22 and the first merit list will be declared on August 27.

While 1.02 lakhs candidates registered last year, only 77,077 students registered on the portal for FYJC admissions 2021. Meena Shendkar, joint deputy director of education, said that 8,000 to 10,000 students withdrew even after registration. As a result, students will have several options and many seats will remain vacant this year, she said, as per the TOI report.

On the other hand, students in Nagpur have demanded Nagpur University to restart its online registration process. The university closed online registration for first year undergraduate courses on August 18, making students angry as they couldn’t enrol, according to the TOI report.

The Vidarbha Student and Youth Organization (VSYO) has requested the Nagpur university to start online registration again as many rural students could not register.

The deputy registrar later issued a circular stating that students who could not register, can visit the colleges they want to take admission in, and register their names offline. NU extended its deadline for registration to September 5.

Earlier, the merit list was supposed to be announced on August 24, but due to the extension of the last date of completion of the admission process, there is much confusion amongst the students, VSYO said, as per the report.

VSYO has also requested NU to declare a new admission schedule, the report said.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government said that it is mulling over the decision of reopening colleges for fully vaccinated students. The final decision regarding college reopening will be taken by the chief minister. However, the Maharashtra Covid-19 task force said that schools should not be reopened before Diwali.
