NEET PG 2022: Supreme Court to hear plea seeking postponement of exam tomorrow

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will hear the plea seeking deferment of the National Eligibility Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2022 exam tomorrow. NEET PG 2022 exam is scheduled to be held on May 21. When the plea was mentioned before the Supreme Court for urgent hearing on May 10, Justice DY Chandrachud said “How can we postpone a national exam? We will list it for hearing first.” He listed the matter for May 13.

On May 4, the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the exam. Several aspirants have been demanding the postponement of NEET PG 2022 exam due to delay in NEET PG 2021 counselling, less gap between entrance exam and counselling, ineligibility of 5,000 medical interns to appear for the exam.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written a letter to union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya requesting the postponement of NEET PG 2022. In the letter, the IMA pointed out that the gap between the NEET PG 2022 exam and the NEET PG 2021 counselling is very short, with the aspirants getting very little time to prepare for such a difficult exam.

Letters to PM Modi, President, Health minister to postpone exam

AIMSA had written a letter to Mandaviya requesting to postpone the NEET PG 2022 exam and NEET MDS 2022 by 8 to 10 weeks.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson also wrote to Mandaviya requesting postponement of the exam. Before P Wilson, several other members of the Parliament also came out in support of students.

MP Hibi Aden wrote a letter to the Mandaviya and said, “I request your consideration to these grievances of junior doctors by postponing NEET PG Exam 2022 for at least 2 months” as “it was found that about 5,000 intern doctors from various states of India are ineligible to appear for the exam.”

P Chidambaram also wrote to the health minister saying, “I am writing to you in solidarity with the thousands of junior doctors who have worked tirelessly to carry India through the pandemic but whose futures are being jeopardized due to the designated cut off date for NEET PG 2022, which renders them ineligible for the same”. He urged Mandaviya to postpone the exam and provide a “proper gap between NEET PG AIQ counselling 2021 and NEET PG 2022 exam.

Aspirants also sought President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention. On May 8, aspirants held a ‘peaceful’ protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi seeking deferment of the exam.
