Telangana HC cancels new domicile rule for NEET PG admissions 2024 after 94 move court

NEW DELHI: Telangana High Court has revoked the state government’s order mandating at least four consecutive schooling years in the state for availing the state quota seats in PG medical admissions 2024. The decision comes while hearing the petitions filed by 94 NEET PG aspirants against the new Telangana local residency rule.

Telangana High Court's division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Sreenivas Rao have struck down an amendment to rule VIII (ii) of Telangana Medical Colleges (Admission into Postgraduate Medical Courses) Rules, 2021, which required the PG medical aspirants to have studied at least four consecutive schooling years in the state for the state quota seats, even if they completed their MBBS in a Telangana medical college.

Welcoming the move, Yaganti Siva Rama Krishna told Careers360 , "As everyone eager for KNRUHS to start NEET PG counselling as soon as possible, we thank Telangana high court for the positive judgement in favour of the students."

Earlier, at least 74 candidates who appeared in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test postgraduate (NEET PG 2024) approached the high court opposing the new rule notified two days after the Telangana NEET PG counselling 2024 began. The state government had made an amendment to Telangana’s Postgraduate Medical Courses Rules 2021 . The number of petitions had increased to 94.

Around 200 to 300 aspirants from the current batch are affected by the four-year study criterion introduced by the Telangana government at the last-minute and is expected to impact over 500 aspirants in the subsequent years, Careers360 had earlier quoted a petitioner, Yaganti Siva Rama Krishna.

The petitioners also argued that the new domicile rule has marked around 200 Telangana medical graduates hailing from other states non-local everywhere in the country. Taking note of this, the Telangana HC put the NEET PG state merit list and counselling on hold.
