Banaras Hindu University has bagged the third position in NIRF Ranking 2021 under the University category for the last three years. Vice-Chancellor of BHU congratulated the university.

Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the NIRF Ranking 2021 today. The Indian universities are awarded ranks on the basis of set parameters, marks, and weightage. This year, 6,000 institutions took part in the India Rankings. IIT Madras has bagged the top position this year too.

Releasing the NIRF Ranking 2021, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said: "I am happy to be part of the India Rankings 2021 along the side lines of the Shiksha Parv initiatives envisioned by our visionary Prime Ministry Shri Narendra Modi ji. Under the college category, Miranda House topped the list followed by Lady Shri Ram, St Stephen's, and the Hindu colleges.

NIRF ranking 2021, released today by education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, has 11 categories. The categories, including research institution, are:

• Architecture,
• Dental.

In the sixth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) announced by Union Education Dharmendra Pradhan, eight IITs and two national Institutes of Technology (NITs) figured in the top ten engineering institutions in the country.

The NIRF 2021 rankings were based on the following categories:

• teaching,
• learning and resources (TLR),
• research and professional practice (RP),
• graduation outcomes (GO),
• outreach and inclusivity (OI),
• peer perception.

National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru has once again been declared the top law school by the NIRF. National Law University (NLU) Delhi and National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) Hyderabad bagged the second and third best institutions for legal education in the country.

A new category, Research Institutions, has been added to the list of NIRF Ranking Lists 2021 taking the total to 11 categories.

Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or AIIMS Delhi , is the best medical college according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The medical category was introduced in 2018 and AIIMS, Delhi has been at the top of the list ever since. Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh took the second spot while Christian Medical College, Vellore has been ranked third.

Miranda House is the best college in India according to the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) India rankings (NIRF 2021).

Speaking on the occasion, Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan suggested regional and provincial ranking frameworks. Talking about the universities, he said, "IISc is reluctant to promote their own achievements"

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad emerged as the best management institute in the NIRF 2021 ranking. IIM Bangalore at the second spot while IIM Calcutta was ranked third in NIRF MBA ranking 2021. All three IIMs have maintained their position from last year NIRF rankings.

A total of 6,000 colleges and universities participated this year for the NIRF 2021 Rankings.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, has been ranked as the top university in the country. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) also retained the second and third positions in the NIRF university ranking 2021.

IIT Madras adjudged the top institute in the NIRF overall category and NIRF engineering college.

"The NIRF Indian rankings should not be considered as an end but the beginning of the improvement of quality in higher education."

The release of NIRF ranking 2021 was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, dental category was added and this year research institution category has been introduced.

Research institutions category has been introduced this year for the first time.

Apart from the IIMs, the NIRF Ranking for management includes six IITs, all in the top 20 ranks. The are the IITs ranked for their management departments in NIRF Ranking for last year:

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru had last won the top spot in 2018 and was pushed to second position by IIT Madras in 2019 in the overall NIRF ranking. IIT Madras has been maintaining its top position since 2016 in the NIRF engineering ranking list. Soon education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will declare NIRF rankings and announce the best colleges in India at a virtual event.

IIT Madras has held on top spot in the NIRF Ranking for engineering colleges since the first NIRF list was declared in 2016. Last year, it was also the top institute in the overall ranking. In engineering, it was followed by IIT Delhi.

The first eight positions in the top ten NIRF engineering ranking list last year was bagged by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). IIT Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Indore were the universities in the top ten spots. National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli was at the ninth position in the NIRD engineering list. Anna University which bagged the ninth position in the NIRF 2019 engineering list was pushed to 14th rank in the NIRF 2020 rankings.

Here is the list of top colleges under each category in NIRF rankings last year.

While the last NIRF MBA Ranking was dominated by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) with IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta in the top three positions, the top private management institutions on the NIRF Ranking was Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur. It came in at Number 9 in the NIRF ranking for MBA.

IIT Madras has been ranked first under the NIRF Engineering rankings since the NIRF's inception. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and IIT-Delhi have bagged the second and third spots in the last year's rankings.

Of these, Jadavpur University is the only state-run public institution and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the only private one.

Is the score shown against each institution reflective of their performance?

• This score is a relative score, not absolute. Therefore a statement that ‘The institution with fail marks is ranked in the top 100’, is incorrect. This is NOT an absolute score.
• In each parameter, percentile score using the log-function has been derived, which gives - where the Very few institutions have got the accreditation, whereas ranking is open to all!
• It is due to this reason that across the Countries, there is both accreditation and ranking.

Can an institution which had a bad accreditation grade get a good rank and vice versa?

• It is possible. The institutions can slip or do better after they got their accreditation. Ranking is a reflection of the yearly performance

Since there is already accreditation, should there be ranking too?

As per the official website: "Accreditation is a one-time (five-year) event and accredited institutions can slip in their yearly performance. Stakeholders are interested in knowing whether the institution is doing better or worse at the end of each year. Ranking is an annual report card to the nation and to the stakeholders on what has been done by the institution in the last one year, on the given performance. Very few institutions have got the accreditation, whereas ranking is open to all. It is due to this reason that across the countries, there is both accreditation and ranking."

Three Indian universities made it to the top 400 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022 . This year, however, no university was placed in the top 200 global rankings. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru-based private university were the three universities in the top 400.

• Accreditation is a five-year comprehensive assessment of the institution as a whole.
• Ranking is a yearly affair.
• Accreditation gives absolute grade, ranking is relative to the other institutions similarly placed.

Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth were the top three colleges in the medical category as per the NIRF rankings 2020.

The NIRF was launched by the Ministery for Education on September 29, 2015. NIRF rankings are released annually to recognize top universities, colleges and other educational institutions across India. NIRF full form - National Institutional Ranking Framework.

The IITs have remained at the top, with IIT Kharagpur at the first position followed by IIT Roorkee as per the NIRF rankings even in architecture category.

Miranda house affiliated to Delhi university has been bagging the top position as per NIRF ranking for the last two years under the college category. The second and third positions have also been secured by Delhi University colleges for the last two year.

The National Law School of India University has been bagging the first position in NIRF ranking under the category of law since 2018 followed by the National Law University (NLU) Delhi and Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad at the second and third positions respectively.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has been securing the first position under the medical category for the last three years followed by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh.

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Mohali was ranked first in NIRF ranking under the pharmacy category in the year 2018, it was replaced by Jamia Hamdard in 2019 and 2020.

Anna University which bagged the ninth position in the NIRF 2019 engineering list was ranked 14th in the NIRF 2020 rankings under the engineering category. While IIT Madras has been maintaining its top position since 2016 in the NIRF engineering ranking list.

The NIRF rankings 2021 will be released for ten categories - Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Dental and Law. The dental college ranking was introduced last year.

In April last year, seven Indian Institutes of Technology - IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee- decided not to participate in THE- World University Rankings 2020. The decision was made after none of the Indian universities was ranked in the top 300 list. They had raised concerns over the transparency of the process.

In NIRF rankings 2020, the top three universities in the management category were

• Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad
• Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore
• Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta

Apart from the Indian Institutes of Technology, three other universities also made it to the top ten in NIRF ranking list 2020. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) were among the non-IITs in the top ten NIRF ranking list 2020.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and IIT-Delhi bagged the second and third spots. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched on September 29, 2015, to rank Indian universities and colleges based on objective criteria to promote competitive excellence.

NIRF rankings 2021: The Indian universities and colleges will be ranked based on

• teaching,
• learning and resources (TLR),
• research and professional practice (RP),
• graduation outcomes (GO),
• outreach and inclusivity (OI),
• peer perception.

The ministry of education, in a tweet, said, “Union Education Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan will be releasing the new ranking of Indian Education Institutions facilitated by NIRF on the 9th of September, 2021 at 12 pm."

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India rankings will be released today (September 9). Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan will be declaring the NIRF ranking 2021, the sixth annual ranking list, of top colleges and universities at a virtual event.
