Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan today declared the National Institutional Ranking Framework India ranking 2021 (NIRF India ranking 2021) at nirfindia.org. The education minister released the sixth annual
NIRF India ranking list 2021
. IIT Madras was adjudged the top institute in the NIRF overall category for the sixth consecutive year. A new category, research institution, was introduced this year taking the total number of categories to 11.

The Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Madras has retained its top spot in the overall university rankings and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has been ranked as the top university in the country.
The NIRF India Ranking 2021 of universities and colleges are based on these six parameters - teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI), peer perception.
The NIRF rankings 2021 categories are- Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Research institution (newly added), Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Dental and Law. The dental college NIRF ranking was introduced last year.

Last year, the NIRF rankings were released on June 11 by former education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’. IIT Madras was ranked first under the overall NIRF India rankings 2020, followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Delhi. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) were also among the non-IITs in the top ten NIRF ranking list 2020.
The NIRF was launched by the Minister for Education on September 29, 2015. NIRF rankings are released annually to recognize top universities, colleges and other educational institutions across India.

Education Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Some of the very good research happens in them but they don’t show in numbers and they should be included”. Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or AIIMS Delhi , is the best medical college according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The medical category was introduced in 2018 and AIIMS, Delhi has been at the top of the list ever since. IIT Madras retains top position in NIRF ranking 2021
The Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Madras has retained its top spot in the overall university rankings in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF Ranking 2021) released by the education ministry. The institute was ranked first in the NIRF ranking 2020 as well.

IISc or IIT Madras: Which university will win top spot in overall NIRF ranking?
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru had last won the top spot in 2018 and was pushed to second position by IIT Madras in 2019 in the overall NIRF ranking. IIT Madras has been maintaining its top position since 2016 in the NIRF engineering ranking list. NIRF Ranking 2021: Why is it important?
Apart from helping students pick institutions, the NIRF Ranking exercise (full form of NIRF is National Institutional Ranking Framework) plays an important role in the education ministry's policy decisions. Achieving and maintaining a high rank in the NIRF is a condition for several policies. For example, institutions with high NIRF Ranks
- Are eligible for education ministry's Graded Autonomy status which frees them of several regulations. For example, they can launch new programmes without having to seek permission.
- Can launch online degree programmes
- Are eligible to apply for Institutions of Eminence status.

NIRF Ranking 2021 Engineering College: Will IIT Madras retain top spot
IIT Madras has held on top spot in the NIRF Ranking for engineering colleges since the first NIRF list was declared in 2016. Last year, it was also the top institute in the overall ranking. In engineering, it was followed by IIT Delhi.

The first eight positions in the top ten NIRF engineering ranking list last year was bagged by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). IIT Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Indore were the universities in the top ten spots. National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirappalli was at the ninth position in the NIRD engineering list. Anna University which bagged the ninth position in the NIRF 2019 engineering list was pushed to 14th rank in the NIRF 2020 rankings.

NIRF Ranking for MBA: Top private MBA college
While the last NIRF MBA Ranking was dominated by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) with IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta in the top three positions, the top private management institutions on the NIRF Ranking was Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur. It came in at Number 9 in the NIRF ranking for MBA.

Is the score shown against each institution reflective of their performance?
- This score is a relative score, not absolute. Therefore a statement that ‘The institution with fail marks is ranked in the top 100’, is incorrect. This is NOT an absolute score.
- In each parameter, percentile score using the log-function has been derived, which gives - where the Very few institutions have got the accreditation, whereas ranking is open to all!
- It is due to this reason that across the Countries, there is both accreditation and ranking.

Since there is already accreditation, should there be ranking too?
As per the official website: "Accreditation is a one-time (five-year) event and accredited institutions can slip in their yearly performance. Stakeholders are interested in knowing whether the institution is doing better or worse at the end of each year. Ranking is an annual report card to the nation and to the stakeholders on what has been done by the institution in the last one year, on the given performance. Very few institutions have got the accreditation, whereas ranking is open to all. It is due to this reason that across the countries, there is both accreditation and ranking."

THE World University Rankings 2022: IISc in top 350
Three Indian universities made it to the top 400 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022 . This year, however, no university was placed in the top 200 global rankings. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru-based private university were the three universities in the top 400.

7 IITs continue to boycott THE rankings
In April last year, seven Indian Institutes of Technology - IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee- decided not to participate in THE- World University Rankings 2020. The decision was made after none of the Indian universities was ranked in the top 300 list. They had raised concerns over the transparency of the process.
