Student Protest: Thousands across campuses strike against CAA-NRC

NEW DELHI: Thousands of students from across college and university campuses once again protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, the National Population Register and the National Register of Citizens on Wednesday. They timed their protest to take place along with the general strike called by workers' unions. Students also protested against the attack on students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University who were attacked by masked men on Sunday. The Vice-Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar met with the Ministry of Human Resource and Development on Wednesday.

The nationwide strike, ‘Bharat Band’ was called by various trade unions to protest against Centre's 'anti-people' policies. Students stood against the CAA which paves the way for granting citizenship on the basis of religion. The They also demanded action against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a students' group linked to the BJP. The alleged that the masked attackers were its members.

The Young India National Coordination Committee, a student organisation which co-ordinated the strike across different campuses, has termed the recent incident in JNU as an "onslaught" on India's secular Constitution and citizenship.

A statement issued by YINCC says: “We stand in full solidarity with the students of JNU in their movement against the monumental fee hike imposed by its administration in an arbitrary manner. We also continue to extend our support to student communities across the country who are protesting against the unconstitutional CAA as well as nation-wide NRC and NPR. The onslaught of fascist currents through the State machinery shall be resisted in all its shape and form, and the student community should continue to take responsibility upon ourselves in resisting it.”

Students of Delhi University occupied the campus streets to protest against CAA, NRC, and police brutality on student protesters on Wednesday morning. St. Stephen's College and Delhi School of Economics also organised a protest in their respective college premises.

Students of Jadavpur University found a rather innovative style to protest and observe the general strike. The students occupied the streets and played chess and cricket.
