NEW DELHI: The trend of globalisation, coupled with the evolving job market, has resulted in an unprecedented surge in the demand for specialised programmes, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). As students increasingly seek higher educational opportunities abroad, these STEM courses have emerged as significant drivers for international education.
Recent data shared in the Open Doors report has shed light on India's remarkable contribution as a talent source for institutions in the United States. In the academic year 2020-21, Indian students accounted for 14.9% of the total number of international students in the US, totalling an impressive count of 12,714 individuals.

By pursuing STEM courses in international institutions, Abhijit Zaveri, founder and director of Career Mosaic said that students gain exposure to emerging technologies, empowering them to become skilled professionals ready to tackle the challenges of the global job market. Here are the top 5 reasons why students should pursue STEM courses abroad.
Expanding Horizons and Flexibility
Foreign universities offer a broader range of advanced course programmes compared to their Indian counterparts. Students have access to a diverse array of specialised courses across various disciplines, enabling them to pursue their specific interests and passions. This expansive selection of programs allows students to explore niche areas of study that may not be available in their home country, thereby broadening their educational horizons. These universities also allow flexibility in their undergraduate programs, allowing students to tailor their education to their specific requirements. This flexibility empowers students to specialise early on in their chosen field of study, providing a focused and in-depth learning experience.
Exposure to International Perspectives and Advanced Technologies
Choosing to study a STEM programme overseas gives students an unparalleled opportunity to be part of different educational landscapes. STEM fields thrive on the cross-pollination of ideas, and an international perspective can fuel innovation. Beyond academics and career prospects, studying abroad offers an invaluable cultural experience.
Post-Study Visa Advantages
Graduates of STEM courses may be eligible for a three-year post-study work visa (optional practical training - OPT) in the United States, which provides an extended opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field of study. This combination of quality education and post-graduation employment prospects makes STEM courses an attractive option for aspiring international students.
Enhanced Employability and Career Prospects
In this increasingly interconnected world, having international exposure can be a powerful differentiator on one’s resume. An international STEM degree signals to employers that the candidate is culturally adaptable, initiative-driven, and resilient. These attributes, when combined with a strong STEM foundation, make such graduates highly sought after, opening doors to a myriad of career opportunities and potentially higher income brackets.
Attractive Research Funding and Scholarships
Given the global emphasis on STEM education, numerous scholarships and research grants are available for students choosing to study these subjects abroad. Scholarships like Generation Google Scholarships, The Meta Research PHD, Fulbright Foreign student program, Mpower Global citizenship scholarship and other government or business scholarships and student loans. This financial support can ease the burden of tuition and living expenses, making quality education more accessible. These scholarships often provide additional opportunities like internships, research projects, and mentorship programmes.
By embracing STEM education abroad, students unlock a bundle of opportunities from amplifying career prospects and cultivating an international network to fostering personal growth and accessing financial aid, the the founder and director added saying that as the demand for STEM professionals continues to surge, the allure and trend of international STEM education will keep gathering momentum.
