Annamalai took to social media X (formerly Twitter) and flagged concerns that due to the MBBS seat withdrawal, the UG medical course tuition fees to be paid by students joining colleges may increase by at least four times.
According to the Times of India report, admissions to all self-financing medical colleges affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and state private universities are done by the state selection committee.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) now lists St Peter’s Medical College (250 seats) and two other institutions, Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Institute of Medical Sciences and Srinivasan Medical College (400 seats), as deemed universities.
TOI report also stated that the officials in the health department said the number could be doubled, as at least three more medical colleges are expecting the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) approval.
However, if three more colleges are granted deemed university status, the number will cross 700 government quota seats and 50 seats under 7.5% government school students quota, the report added.

No NOC issued for deemed university status
Former BJP minister also highlighted that MGR Medical University has clarified that it has not issued any No Objection Certificate (NOC) to these three colleges for obtaining deemed university status.
Further, the case regarding the rejection letter issued to St Peter's Medical College is currently pending in the court.
Moreover, as per the provisions of UGC’s deemed university regulations , 2022, if the affiliated university does not object within 60 days, the commission can assume that there is no objection from the state government and the affiliated university and grant the status of the university.
The minister has urged the current Tamil Nadu Vetri Kalka government to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and identify those who deliberately failed to take appropriate action.
Annamalai posted on his X account and said: “I urge that the dream and future of thousands of students to get medical education at a low cost should not be allowed to be sacrificed to administrative negligence and anyone's selfish interests.”
TN MBBS admission may become more competitive
Several reports have suggested that the TN MBBS admission process may become more competitive. While the number of MBBS seats is not expected to fall, fewer medical seats may be available through the Tamil Nadu state counselling process. The final MBBS seat distribution will be confirmed after publication of the TN MBBS seat matrix.
