Two IIT Madras researchers win Swarnajayanti Fellowship

NEW DELHI: Two researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have been selected for the ‘Swarnajayanti Fellowship’ awards for the year 2019-20, a statement from the institute said.

The researchers are Prabhu Rajagopal, professor, department of mechanical engineering and P Anbarasan, associate professor, department of chemistry. While Rajagopal has been selected for engineering science, Anbarasan has been selected for chemical science.

The two researchers are among the 21 researchers in the country selected for the recognition.

Under this scheme, a select number of young scientists, with a proven track record, are provided special assistance to enable them to pursue basic research in frontier areas of science and technology.

Expressing his gratitude for the recognition of his contribution, Rajagopal said, “Grateful to the DST for recognizing the breakthrough potential of my work in Quantum Phononics. The prestigious Swarnajayanti Fellowship award is an important milestone and is sure to help seek wider support and scale up this effort.”

About Swarnajayanti Fellowship

Under this scheme, a select number of young scientists, with a proven track record, are provided special assistance and support to enable them to pursue basic research in frontier areas of science and technology.

The award consists of a Fellowship of Rs. 25,000 per month. This is in addition to the salary drawn from the parent institute along with a research grant of Rs 5 lakh per annum for a period of five years.

Also, the project submitted by the selected fellows will be considered for funding by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) as per norms, for recurring and non-recurring heads.

The fellowships are scientist specific and not institution-specific, very selective and have close academic monitoring.
