UGC asks universities to enable credit transfer for Swayam courses

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested all universities to enable credit transfer to the academic record of the students for courses done on the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform.

UGC also requested the universities to adopt the SWAYAM courses offered to provide maximum benefits to the students' community and asked universities to cooperate in adopting and promoting Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered through the SWAYAM platform.

The regulations regarding the SWAYAM platform enable an institution to allow up to 4O percent of the total courses being offered in a particular programme in a semester through the SWAYAM platform. According to a letter from UGC, as many as 7,115 courses have been offered since the launch. About 2.72 crore learners have enrolled for the programmes offered on the SWAYAM platform, and 11.13 lakhs certificates have been issued. The letter further noted that the SWAYAM platform witnessed an increase in usage about 2.5 lakh times during the lockdown induced by the COVID 19 pandemic.

As per a survey conducted by the education ministry, more than 70 percent of students spanning from about 338 institutions across India expressed interest in availing credit transfer of SWAYAM courses.
